Students acquire a foundation in the counseling core and strength in the specialty field courses in program development, consultation and intervention, counseling children and adolescents, and individual and group appraisal. Students become competent in utilizing the Alabama State Department of Education Comprehensive Counseling and Guidance Plan that exemplifies national standards. Our program is approved by the California State Board of Behavioral Sciences (BBS) to meet the educational requirements preparing students for state licensure as Marriage and Family Therapists (MFT). The 60-unit Community Counseling program leads to Marriage and Family Therapist (MFT) and Licensed Professional Clinical Counselor (LPCC) licenses in California. The program relies heavily on interpersonal skill training and field experiences, beginning during the first semester and culminating with an intensive supervised internship in some aspect of counseling, permitting the integration of theory, research, and practical application after the first year.
